South Lakes High School Renovation

Rendering by Eddy & Eckhardt Architects

Reston, VA
In 2003, Fairfax County voters approved a $290 Million bond which included a renovation project for South Lakes High School, slated to begin winter 2006.

Originally conceived and constructed as part of the "open schools" movement of the 1970's, South Lakes has operated since September 1978 with only half walls between the classrooms and no doors. The classrooms also lack windows - there is no natural light in the school. In addition, there are currently four cafeterias.

The project at South Lakes High School includes the renovation of the 309,000 square foot high school plus 12,500 square feet of additions, associated site work and out buildings. A benefit from the renovation will be a naturally lighted, two-story art and music area. The current four cafeterias will be consolidated into one big room in the middle of the school. Nearly every instructional area will be increased in size. Renovated areas also include: administrative offices, athletic courts, an auditorium, computer labs, gymnasium and a media center/library. The work shall be completed in phases in order to allow the school partial and continuing occupancy of the existing building during construction. Normal operations shall be maintained during the course of the school year.
