The new school serves grades pre-K through fifth and first opened in the fall of 2018. The objective of the Bayard Rustin Elementary School project was to construct a new school on the site of the former Hungerford Park Elementary, which was closed in July 1982, to meet growing student enrollment projections in the area.

The replacement facility was designed for an initial capacity of 602 students, but the building and core spaces were ultimately redesigned to accommodate 740 students. A philosophy of adaptable classrooms with the flexibility to accommodate various presentation formats and maximum connectivity to outside resources was incorporated in the design. Instructional areas include adequate learning space, work areas, restrooms, storage, and other support facilities. The school was designed to achieve the LEED Silver certification, but upon completion received LEED Gold.
